| SPRUCE BUD GALL |
| -COOLEY SPRUCE BUD GALL and Eastern Bud Gall (scientific names Adelges cooleyi and Adelges abietis respectively), although slightly different in shape and host preference, have almost identical affects on your valued Spruce and Fir trees. As such, we will cover these 2 common Michigan pest problems together.
Spruce Bud Gall Aphids, by themselves, will not outright kill your trees. However, they do distort the shape of the plant, stress the tree (making vulnerable to other pests and diseases), and produce brown galls (sometimes numbering in the hundreds) which can make your Spruces and Firs very unsightly in your landscape. Also, the galls formed by these pests can kill the new growth points on infected trees. This can be detrimental to the plant, since evergreens generally will only grow at the tips of the twigs and branches. |
